The foundation of my research program is built upon the understanding of the complex interaction between human sensory processing, the environment, and resulting behaviour. The sensory systems’ interactions with behavior and the environment play a key role in development by affecting the information an individual has access to. Irregularities in sensory processing affect the progression of various mental and developmental disorders (e.g. autism, addiction, anxiety, bipolar disorder; Marco et al., Hoffman & Bitran 2007; Yeap et al., 2009), and sensory interventions have been met with wide success in autism spectrum disorders (Case-Smith et al., 2015). It is my goal to broaden the scope of these successful interventions using neuroimaging, physiology, and behavioural methods to pinpoint neural system functioning that results in healthy and adaptive perception.
